I personally use a paper datebook and get comments about how I’m not keeping up with the times and technology. This article confirms some important points about why an electronic planner (eg. your phone) might not be right for you — as it doesn’t work for me for scheduling/datebook needs.
- The article states that writing things down by hand helps you retain information better. You need to go a bit slower and perhaps be more mindful. I find that I review my datebook more frequently because it’s tangible and solid in my hand.
- A paper planner has everything in one place for the most part. A phone probably has different apps for your calendar; for your to-do list; and for your notes.
- Use a paper planner in addition to the benefits of technology on your phone. The article talks about recurring tasks. I get around that by programming those reminders not in my calendar but in the Reminders section of my iPhone. So, every Monday I get reminded to write my Facebook Tip of the Week and every month I get reminded to make sure my webmaster posted my Terri’s Tip on my website.
- Find the planner that works for you. I get a small $12 one that I buy each year from Office Depot/Max and it fits perfectly in my backpack purse and is with me all the time — along with my phone.
